Varanasi
The city has long rows of stone steps called ghats leading down to the water. These steps are places where people pray, bathe, meet friends, work, and welcome visitors.
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. Millions of pilgrims visit each year to bathe in the sacred Ganges river, and perform other spiritual rituals or seek freedom from the cycle of rebirth. The city’s ghats (giant steps by the river), temples, and cremation sites reflect the deep spiritual darkness they live in. This area is home to one of the largest Unreached People Groups in India. They have little or no access to the Gospel in their own language and culture. Although the church is growing, believers often face social rejection, harassment, and increasing pressure under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion laws.

For ages 6–8: Spot it: can you find a boat full of people, cows, goats, and people gathered on the steps?
For ages 9–12: How would you show kindness to someone in Varanasi who feels alone or is searching for answers about life?
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”
Psalm 42:1-2
What does it mean? God invites us to pray with hope for people everywhere.
Try it: tap one important word to circle it. Then draw a tiny picture on paper to help you remember it.
Lord, many here do not know you. They don’t even have the opportunity to read your word for themselves in their language. May people work to translate your word into their language. May it pierce their hearts and souls, cutting them and removing away all that is dead there. In its place, give them new hearts and new lives that follow and love you. Give them your Spirit and bring freedom to these people who light lamps for freedom but are trapped in darkness. Thank you for loving them like you love me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Tap each prayer star after you pray.
Pray for this large Unreached People Group. Pray the Bible would quickly be translated into their language. Pray that God would send people here to share the gospel and reach these people.
Pray that as Pastors, Evangelists, and believers serve in the area they would have the courage and protection of Jesus on their side as they face opposition and persecution. God would give them strength to endure.
Pray that the veil that covers their eyes from the truth would be lifted. It would cause them to seek and encounter the truth of Jesus Christ.
Pray that the people participating in Diwali would seek God and find Him when they seek Him with all their hearts. May they find the hope and blessing they are seeking.
Pray for Christian families and churches to grow. May the laws be loosened so the gospel could spread unhindered, and if not, may God protect believers from persecution so that all might hear and know and be saved.
What would you ask God to do in this city?
In Varanasi, people gather beside the Ganges and light small lamps called diyas. During the ceremonies, at night, the light reflects off the water.
If you could share Jesus’ light with someone in Varanasi, what would you pray for them? Color the candle to remind yourself that you are a light. A city on a hill that cannot be hidden.

Your prayer is saved on this device, so it will still be here when you come back. Nobody else can see it unless a grown-up helps you share it.
Ask your parent or guardian to read this part with you.
We never ask for a child’s name or contact details. Our team reads every prayer before it appears on the wall, and you can ask us to remove it at any time using the reference code you’ll see after sending: Neem contact met ons op.
