Beyond the borders of the Ganges basin, Hindus carry faith, culture, and tradition across oceans, reshaping the religious, economic, and cultural landscapes of the countries where they settle. Let’s focus our prayers today on the Indian diaspora, now over 18 million strong, which has become one of the most geographically dispersed and influential migrant populations di dunia.
One visible marker of the presence of the diaspora is temple-building. Some observers see such large-scale temple projects as more than places of worship—functioning also as durable, physical assertions of community presence and permanence in a new land, akin to a form of cultural territory-marking, though others simply view them as devotional and communal centers. Similarly, yoga's mainstream popularity in Western fitness and wellness culture reflects a parallel normalization of Hindu-rooted spiritual practice that is carried forth by the diaspora. Within the diaspora, Gujaratis are especially prominent, historically emigrating as entrepreneurs, motel owners, and professionals, building strong transnational business networks. Estimated to make up around 33% of the worldwide Indian diaspora, they are present in 129 of the 190 UN-recognized sovereign nations, likely numbering in the 6-10 million range.
As the Hindu diaspora continues to grow worldwide, Hindu religious celebrations such as Diwali gain broader public recognition. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights marking the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil (often tied to Rama redeeming Sita and bringing her home). During Diwali, Hindus light oil lamps (diyas) and candles, and offer prayers to deities such as Lakshmi and Ganesh, often accompanied by fireworks and festive gatherings.
“... but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” Isaiah 60:1-3 (NIV)
“We declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” the things God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 (NIV)
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” Romans 6:22 (NIV)
Matius 5:9
