Serving like Jesus

Humility changes communities
“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:7–8

Praying For

Missionary families serving quietly
TODAY’S STORY:
Mariama Sees a Different Way
A girl sees Christian families serving humbly, and her village begins to change.
Justin’s Thoughts
Serving others may seem small, but it changes everything. Jesus humbled Himself and served people. When we choose to help quietly, people notice something different. Pray for believers in Niger who work hard and love deeply. Ask Jesus to help you serve at home today.

Mariama Sees a Different Way

(Niamey, Niger)

Niamey is a city beside the wide Niger River. The sun can be very hot, and the streets can feel dusty and bright. People sell mangoes and peanuts at roadside stalls. Motorbikes buzz past, and goats sometimes wander near the markets as if they own the place.

Nine-year-old Mariama lived in a neighbourhood where everyone knew everyone. She helped her mother fetch water, swept the courtyard, and watched her little brother while her mother cooked.

Mariama was a careful observer. She noticed small things: who shared food, who kept their door open, who helped an elderly neighbour carry a heavy bag.

A new family arrived in the neighbourhood one month before the rainy season. They came from another country and spoke with a different accent. They were friendly, but they didn’t act like tourists. They stayed. They learned local words. They greeted people respectfully.

Mariama watched them closely.

The mother, Mrs. Hana, often carried a large bag of supplies and walked to visit women in the neighbourhood. Sometimes Mariama saw her sit with a neighbour whose baby was sick. Sometimes she helped cook. Sometimes she swept someone’s courtyard without being asked.

One day Mariama asked her mother, “Why does she help so much?”

Her mother shrugged. “Some people like to do good things.”

But Mariama noticed something else.

When Mrs. Hana helped, she didn’t show off. She didn’t make a big noise. She didn’t act like she was more important.

She served like it was normal. Like it was joyful.

One afternoon, Mariama’s little brother spilled a pot of water. It splashed everywhere, and Mariama felt her face burn with frustration. Water was heavy to carry, and now they would have to fetch more.

Mariama’s mother sighed. “It’s okay,” she said, but Mariama could tell she was tired.

Just then, Mrs. Hana walked past the gate. She paused, saw the wet ground, and asked kindly, “May I help?”

Before Mariama could answer, Mrs. Hana was already lifting the bucket and helping clean the mess. She smiled at Mariama and said, “Don’t worry. Everyone makes mistakes.”

Mariama couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Later, Mariama saw Mrs. Hana sitting under a tree with a few women. They weren’t arguing. They were talking gently. Mariama heard one word repeated: Isa — Jesus.

That night Mariama asked her mother, “Do they follow Jesus?”

Her mother frowned a little, as if unsure what to say. “Some people do.”

Mariama nodded and thought about Mrs. Hana’s kindness.

A few days later, Mariama’s mother became ill. She lay on a mat, sweating, unable to stand.

Mariama was frightened because she didn’t know what to do. She tried to fan her mother and bring cool water, but her mother still looked weak.

Then Mrs. Hana came to the gate.

“I heard your mother is sick,” she said softly. “May I visit?”

Mariama led her inside. Mrs. Hana sat beside Mariama’s mother, held her hand, and prayed quietly to Jesus. She asked for healing and strength. She asked for peace in their home.

Afterwards, Mrs. Hana stayed to help cook. She washed dishes. She helped Mariama’s brother eat. She didn’t rush.

Mariama felt something warm in her chest — not just relief, but wonder.

When her mother finally felt better and could sit up, she looked at Mariama and whispered, “That woman loves with her actions.”

Mariama nodded.

From then on, Mariama tried to copy what she saw. She helped her brother without complaining. She tidied things without being asked. She carried water for an older neighbour once a week.

And when she did, she remembered Mrs. Hana’s smile.

Mariama began to understand something important:

Jesus teaches people to serve with humility.

And humble love can change a whole neighbourhood.
