Testimony: An Imam Follows Jesus

He was a respected imam in a fully Muslim neighbourhood — a man who had preached Islam faithfully for years and whose authority in the community was unquestioned. Every Friday he stood before his congregation and delivered the sermon that was expected of him.

Then, on one unremarkable Friday, he came to a verse in the Quran calling for the separation and discrimination of non-Muslims. He had read it many times. He had taught it many times. But this time, standing before his congregation, something stopped him. A conviction settled deep in his chest that he could not explain and could not dismiss: this is not right.

He finished the sermon. But he could not finish the question that had begun inside him. For weeks he wrestled with it privately — the weight of having believed something, and taught something, that he now could not accept.

Around this time he heard of a man in the area who had quietly left Islam and become a follower of Jesus — a former mosque attendee who had endured real persecution for his new faith. The imam sought him out. They met in secret. Then they met again. And again. Many quiet conversations followed, weeks of them, each one drawing the imam closer to the truth he was already beginning to sense.

Eventually, the imam made his choice. He gave his life to Jesus Christ. The one who had taught against the Gospel was now living it.

“If God gave them the same gift...who was I that I could withstand God?” (Acts 11:17)

• Ask the Lord to restrain opposition to the Church arising from governments, extremist movements, and false teaching.
• Intercede for those who oppress the Church, asking God to save them, set them free and fill them with the Holy Spirit for His purposes.
