Kingdom at the Door
In a Buddhist temple in North Texas, gospel seeds were sown in an unexpected place.
Door-to-door outreach had produced little response. But when workers began building friendships with Buddhist monks who wanted to learn English, a door opened. Using 10 Stories of the Greatest Man to Ever Live, a story set that had been used with success in Laos, the team began teaching English through stories about Jesus.
Soon, two to five monks were gathering regularly in the temple for discovery-style Bible discussions. They listened, asked questions, and retold the stories in their own words. When asked what the stories revealed about Jesus, they responded with statements like, “He’s a miracle worker,” “He has power over demons,” and “He’s the Savior of the world.”
After three months, the meetings ended without an immediate harvest. One monk eventually left the monkhood and returned to Laos. Another passed away after hearing the gospel for the first time. Yet the seed had been faithfully planted.
Only God knows what happened in the soil of each heart. Jesus reminds us that some seed will fall on good soil and produce an abundant harvest. So we pray with faith:
“Lord, continue to water every seed planted. Soften hearts, remove spiritual barriers, and send others to cultivate what has been planted. May these gospel seeds take deep root and, in your perfect timing, produce a harvest that brings many Buddhist monks into the Kingdom of God.”
