Damasco \u00e9 considerada por muitos como a capital mais antiga. cidade do mundo e tem sido chamada de \u201cP\u00e9rola do Oriente\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambas as cidades sofreram muitas perdas e deteriora\u00e7\u00e3o desde o in\u00edcio da guerra. Sob o controlo opressivo de Bashar al-Assad, o conflito diminuiu. As viagens para Damasco e Aleppo foram retomadas e s\u00e3o relativamente seguras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante gera\u00e7\u00f5es existiu uma grande comunidade crist\u00e3 em Damasco, mas o genoc\u00eddio em meados do s\u00e9culo XIX fez com que muitos abandonassem o pa\u00eds. N\u00e3o foi realizado um censo religioso abrangente na S\u00edria desde a d\u00e9cada de 1960, mas estima-se que apenas 6% da popula\u00e7\u00e3o seja crist\u00e3.
