Eeuwenlang floreerden Joodse gemeenschappen zoals de Bene Israel in Mumbai en Gujarat, Cochin-Joden in Kerala, Bagdad-Joden in Mumbai en Pune, en Bnei Menashe in Manipur en Mizoram. Na de stichting van Isra\u00ebl in 1948 maakten velen echter Aliyah (keerden terug naar Isra\u00ebl), waardoor er slechts een kleine gemeenschap achterbleef.
