Het is de grootste haven van het land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Islamitische mystiek werd voor het eerst ge\u00efntroduceerd in Basra door al-Hasan al-Basri kort na de dood van Mohammed. Het staat ook wel bekend als het soefisme en was een ascetisch antwoord op wat in de islam werd gezien als een toenemende wereldsgezindheid. Tegenwoordig bevindt de theologische school van de Mu\u02bftazilah zich in Basra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Maagd Maria Chaldeeuwse Kerk is de grootste christelijke eredienst in Basra en is onlangs gerenoveerd. Er zijn echter maar heel weinig volgelingen van Jezus in de stad. Er wordt geschat dat ongeveer 350 gezinnen een of andere vorm van christendom aanhangen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoewel de christenen van Irak worden beschouwd als een van de oudste nog bestaande christelijke gemeenschappen ter wereld, hebben de oorlog en de onrust van de afgelopen vijftien jaar ertoe geleid dat velen van hen Basra en het land hebben verlaten.
