De bevolking bestaat traditioneel uit Koerden en een aanzienlijke minderheid van christelijke Arabieren. Na veel etnische conflicten viel de stad in juni 2014 in handen van de Islamitische Staat van Irak en de Levant (ISIL). In 2017 verdreven Iraakse en Koerdische troepen de soennitische opstandelingen eindelijk. Sindsdien zijn er inspanningen geleverd om de door oorlog verscheurde regio te herstellen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volgens de overlevering stichtte de profeet Jona een kerk in wat nu Mosul is, hoewel dit slechts speculatie is. Nineve lag aan de oostoever van de Tigris in het oude Assyri\u00eb, en Mosul ligt aan de westoever. Nebi Yunis wordt vereerd als het traditionele graf van Jona, maar het werd in juli 2014 door IS verwoest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slechts enkele tientallen christelijke families zijn sinds de herovering in 2017 teruggekeerd naar Mosul.
