Het is nog steeds een belangrijk cultureel centrum van de Levant en de Arabische wereld. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helaas zijn tegenwoordig grote delen van het oostelijke en zuidelijke deel van de stad door de burgeroorlog verwoest. Vluchtelingen uit andere delen van het land zijn naar Damascus gekomen, waardoor de huisvesting en andere hulpbronnen onder grote druk komen te staan. Door de ontwrichting van veel bedrijven en industrie\u00ebn zijn de werkloosheid en de wijdverbreide armoede hoog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bashar al-Assad is nog steeds aan de macht, en de enige echte hoop op genezing en transformatie van Syri\u00eb is het goede nieuws van Jezus.
