De oude stad staat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Volgens de legende werd Jemen gesticht door Sem, een van de drie zonen van Noach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tegenwoordig is Jemen de thuisbasis van de ergste humanitaire crisis ter wereld, nadat zes jaar geleden een brutale burgeroorlog uitbrak. Sindsdien zijn ruim vier miljoen mensen hun huizen ontvlucht en zijn er 233.000 slachtoffers gevallen door de oorlog. Momenteel telt Jemen ruim twintig miljoen mensen die voor hun voortbestaan afhankelijk zijn van een of andere vorm van humanitaire hulp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minder dan 0,1% van de bevolking is christen. Gelovigen komen in het geheim en alleen in kleine groepen bijeen en krijgen te maken met gevaarlijke tegenstand.
