Damsyik dianggap oleh ramai sebagai ibu kota tertua bandar di dunia dan telah dipanggil &quot;Mutiara Timur.&quot; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kedua-dua bandar telah mengalami banyak kerugian dan kemerosotan sejak perang bermula. Di bawah kawalan Bashar al-Assad yang menindas, konflik telah berkurangan. Perjalanan ke Damsyik dan Aleppo telah disambung semula dan agak selamat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selama beberapa generasi komuniti Kristian yang besar wujud di Damsyik, tetapi pembunuhan beramai-ramai pada pertengahan abad ke-19 menyebabkan ramai yang meninggalkan negara itu.
