Walaupun agak kecil dengan hanya 1.3 juta orang, ia mempunyai kepentingan keagamaan yang cukup besar. Qom dianggap suci dalam Islam Syiah, kerana ia adalah tapak kuil Fatimah binti Musa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sejak revolusi 1979, Qom telah menjadi pusat perkeranian Iran, dengan lebih daripada 45,000 Imam, atau &quot;pemimpin rohani,&quot; tinggal di sini. Banyak Ayatollah Besar mempunyai pejabat di Tehran dan Qom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walaupun perlembagaan Iran mengiktiraf Kristian sebagai salah satu daripada empat agama yang boleh diterima, pengecualian adalah sesiapa yang menukar agama daripada Islam kepada Kristian, yang menyalahi undang-undang dan boleh dihukum mati. Walaupun begitu, beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini telah menyaksikan sejumlah besar mualaf.
