La poblaci\u00f3n ha estado tradicionalmente compuesta por kurdos y una minor\u00eda significativa de \u00e1rabes cristianos. Despu\u00e9s de mucho conflicto \u00e9tnico, la ciudad cay\u00f3 en manos del Estado Isl\u00e1mico de Irak y Levante (ISIL) en junio de 2014. En 2017, las fuerzas iraqu\u00edes y kurdas finalmente expulsaron a los insurgentes sun\u00edes.
