Kanpur

Nestled on the banks of Ganges River, Kanpur has been the major financial and industrial center of North India. Founded in 1207, Kanpur became one of the most important commercial and military stations of British India.

It is the ninth-largest urban economy in India, primarily due to the cotton textile mills that make it the largest producer of these products in Northern India. Kanpur is also well known as a producer of high-quality leather products that are also exported worldwide.

After 1947, thousands of Hindu and Sikh refugees arrived at Kanpur from Pakistan. A large Sikh community still exists in the city.

Hinduism is the majority religion in Kanpur with 78% followers, and Islam is second with 20%. Less than 1.5% of the city’s population is Christian.
