Jaipur is the capital city of the Rajasthan state in northwestern India and is known primarily for its textile trade. Jaipur fabrics are prized throughout India as well as being exported throughout the world.
The city gets its name from King Jai Singh, who was renowned for his knowledge of astronomy. Known as the “pink city” for its trademark building color in the Old City, Jaipur is a frequent tourist destination in India. The city was painted pink, the color of hospitality, in honor of a visit by England’s Prince of Wales in 1876.
The metropolis has a mixed Hindu-Muslim population, with more than 78% of the 4.2 million residents being Hindu and 19% being Muslim. In the early 21st century, Jaipur was the site of numerous bombing attacks that targeted mosques and Hindu temples.
