Mumbai is the capital of the Maharashtra state and India’s most populous city, home to more than 21 million people. The metropolis is one of the world’s largest and most densely populated urban areas and is a leading financial center of India.
On the Mumbai Harbor waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India stone arch, built by the British Raj in 1924. Offshore, nearby Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
Initially, Mumbai was made up of 7 different islands. However, between the years of 1784 and 1845, British engineers brought all 7 islands together and unified it to be one large landmass.
The city is famous as the heart of the Bollywood film industry. It is a mix of iconic oldworld- charm architecture alongside strikingly modern high rises.
Hindus comprise 80% of the citizens, with 11.5% identifying as Muslims and just 1% as Christians. Many people come to Mumbai in search of opportunity, and almost every unengaged people group in the country can be found here.
