Hinduism?<\/h1><\/header>\n<div class=\"prose\"><p class=\"lead\">We invite you to join us on our journey with Jesus, this week, visiting key cities along the River Ganges, inviting millions of people to know and follow the source of living water and light of the world. To understand others and lift them up meaningfully in prayer, we first need to step into their world. It can be helpful to learn where they come from, what shapes their daily lives, what they value, and how they understand God, worship, and prayer. That is why we begin here: to step into their world, listen and learn with humility, and bring them before the Father with a deeper understanding of how to pray.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"two story\">\n<article class=\"prose\">\n<h2>The River and the Gift<\/h2>\n<p>Maya sat beside Grandfather with her map open between them. A blue line curled down the page from the mountains, through great cities, and all the way to the sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandfather,\u201d Maya asked, \u201cwhy are we praying for people along this river?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandfather traced the blue line with his finger. \u201cBecause every dot on this map is filled with people God knows and loves. The children walking to school, parents going to work, grandparents telling stories, shopkeepers, students, artists, and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut many of them are Hindu?\u201d Maya asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d said Grandfather. \u201cHinduism is not just one simple set of beliefs. It is a great family of traditions. Hindu people may celebrate different festivals, read different sacred stories, pray in different ways, or give special honor to different deities. Many believe that a person\u2019s choices, called <i>karma<\/i>, create a cycle of working for and trying to earn a better way out. Many hope one day to be free from that cycle; this freedom is called <i>moksha<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya was quiet for a moment. \u201cThen what makes the good news about Jesus so important?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandfather smiled. \u201cChristians believe that we do not have to climb our way to God through our own efforts. God came toward us first. Jesus came to show us what God is like, to carry our sin and shame, and to offer forgiveness as a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gift?\u201d Maya asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gift,\u201d Grandfather said. \u201cNot something we earn by being good enough. Jesus offers grace. This grace is God\u2019s loving kindness that we do not deserve and cannot buy. Christians believe that Jesus died and rose again so that everyone who trusts Him can be forgiven, know God personally, and receive eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when we pray,\u201d she said slowly, \u201cwe are not praying because we think we are better than anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly right,\u201d said Grandfather. \u201cWe pray because Jesus loves people. We pray that families will have the chance to hear His story clearly, that Christians will live with humility and kindness, and that every person will be free to ask questions and respond for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya drew a gift by the river and wrote one sentence across the bottom of her page:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pull hand\">Jesus\u2019 good news is a gift of grace for every person, in every city, along every river.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<aside class=\"factbox\"><h3>Fast Facts<\/h3>\n<p class=\"big\">1.2 billion<\/p><p>Hindus worldwide.
