QOM

I live in Qom, one of the most influential religious cities in Iran. The golden dome of the shrine of Fatima Masumeh rises above the skyline, and thousands of seminarians walk our streets every day studying Islamic theology. For many in the Muslim world, Qom is a center of spiritual authority — a place where clerics are trained and religious guidance flows outward to the nation and beyond.

Life here is shaped by religion more than in almost any other Iranian city. The seminaries and religious schools fill entire neighborhoods, and pilgrims arrive constantly to visit the shrine. Yet beneath the devotion and tradition, the city also carries tension. Recent protests across Iran have reached even places like Qom, bringing arrests, crackdowns, and fear to communities that once seemed untouchable.

The atmosphere has grown even heavier with the wider regional conflict. In recent months, targeted strikes and intelligence operations connected to the war have affected areas of Qom province, including the killing of a Revolutionary Guard commander linked to regional proxy networks. At the same time, the government has intensified security measures, arrests, and even executions related to alleged espionage and protest activity in the city.

Despite this pressure, life continues. Pilgrims still circle the shrine courtyard. Students debate theology in the seminaries. Families gather for evening meals. Yet many people quietly wonder about the future — about truth, justice, and peace in a nation under strain.

For followers of Jesus in Qom, faith must remain hidden. Believers meet quietly, often in homes, encouraging one another and praying for their city. I believe that even here — in one of the strongest centers of Islamic authority in the world — God is moving. The same city known for training religious leaders may one day witness many hearts turning to the true Prince of Peace.
